Drummer Jennifer Zhu and piper Ryan Gordon are the 2021 recipients of the Scotty Trotter Memorial Award for Musical Achievement. The award was donated by Graham "Scotty" Trotter in 1994 and every year since the band has presented the award to recognize the band member(s) who has made the most improvement as a musician during the previous year.  The recipient is chosen by the other band members in a secret vote. The winner is usually announced at the annual Burns Night supper but physical presentation of the 2021 awards will have to wait until we're allowed to gather again.

Just over two weeks of shopping days until Christmas and we've got the perfect gift for that special someone who is Scottish at heart: tickets to the NWT Pipe Band's 2023 Robert Burns Dinner & Dance at the Elks Hall on Saturday, January 28, 2023. Tickets are $100 apiece and include a traditional Burns dinner with roast beef and haggis, performances by the NWT Pipe Band and a DJ dance afterwards. Contact NWT Pipe Band for info on how to get your tickets!

All tickets have been sold as of 2024-01-08.  A waiting list has been started so that in the event that the holder of a ticket wants to sell their ticket, they can try to sell you their ticket.  If you want to be on that list, please contact us - https://nwtpipeband.org/index.php/contact .

That time of year is approaching fast - the immensely popular annual Northwest Territorial Pipe Band's Burn's Night Supper.  This is an annual Scottish cultural event across the planet.  But it is also the must-attend social event of the year for Yellowknife. Dust-off your brogues, dig out your Sgian-dubh and targ (no claymores or broadswords please), iron-out those pleats in your kilt and enjoy a Scottish cultural evening hosted by the Northwest Territorial Pipe Band.

Robert Burns is the poet laureate of Scotland and credited with starting what we call today, the Romantic movement.  His birthday was on 25 January 1759 and across the world groups gather to recite his poetry, play the pipes and drums, dance and engage in other cultural activities.  There will be haggisneeps and tatties.  There will be "beverages".  There will be a cèilidh after (dancing).  Details of the programme are still being finalized.

Here are the particulars:

Due to the limited number of tickets and popularity of this event, tickets are always in high demand.  We often sell out early but establish a waiting list.  If tickets sell out, you can email NWT Pipe Band to be put on the waiting list.

We will do our best to accommodate.  Block seating is possible on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Payment may be made by:

  • the Zeffy ticketing system (preferred)

Thank you.

What is Burns Night?

Piping in the Haggis 2016

There will be no Burns Night organized and run by the Northwest Territorial Pipe Band in January 2022.  This is due to COVID-19 restrictions and the sudden upswing in cases generated by the Omicron variant of the virus.

We hope to have a Burns Night in January 2023, when there has been a return to normalcy.  Consider running your own Burns Night...Burns Night.

The NWT Pipe Band hopes to resume beginners' piping lessons sometime in 2022.

Pandemic restrictions by the Government of the NWT currently prohibit the playing of woodwind instruments in indoor public places.  The Great Highland Bagpipe and practice chanter are each woodwind instruments.   We are practising on electronic chanters.  When we practice in person, physical distancing, masking and double vaccinations are mandatory.

We plan to start beginner piping lessons as soon as the restriction on wind instruments is lifted by the Chief Public Health Officer of the Northwest Territories.  We are working on getting an exemption from the prohibition from the Chief Public Health Officer.

We expect that beginner lessons on practice chanters will be held Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. once Band practices resume on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Please contact us via our NWT Pipe Band page if you are interested in piping lessons and we'll let you know ASAP when lessons are scheduled to begin.

Please note: NWTPB beginner piping lessons are for adults only.

These galleries have been loaded with the photo archives of the Northwest Territorial Pipe Band.  The resolution of the pictures has been reduced to 640 x 640 or about 40-100 kB.  This is to ensure that the galleries load properly.

If you have images to be uploaded, please e-mail NWT Pipe Band .  Similarly if you find an image is in the wrong gallery, let us know.

We are trying to phase-out the use of Flickr and make this system our primary photo gallery.

You are free to use these images for non-commercial use with proper attribution (i.e. credit).  If you wish to donate to the Band, please contact us.  For commercial users, please contact us.
